Unfortunately, there was no SSR today.  Instead, students completed two activities to prepare for the vocabulary quiz on Friday.  We also continued watching the Ernest Hemingway video.

Assignment:  Study vocabulary for the quiz on Friday.  Enjoy the homecoming parade.

Tuesday, September 29

After collecting the Frames on the life and work of Ernest Hemingway, we began watching the A and E biography about him.  Students are completing a study guide as they watch the video.

Assignment:  Study vocabulary words for Lessons 1-3.  Quiz is Friday.

Monday, September 28

During SSR, the completion of vocabulary flashcards for Lesson 3 was checked.  Next, we continued our work with the vocabulary by reviewing Lesson 3.

As part of our introduction to The Old Man and the Sea, the students did a group activity to prepare for some of the themes in the novel.

Assignment: Complete the Frame activity over the life of Ernest Hemingway.  Due Tuesday.

Friday, September 25

After a brief SSR, students were introduced to the vocabulary words for List Three.  (The quiz will be next Friday.)  We also wrapped up our discussion of Into the Wild and watched a short clip from the film.

Assignment:  10 flashcards for the List Three vocabulary words.

Thursday, September 24

After a quiz over Into the Wild, we discussed the connection between Chris McCandless and Thorea and Emerson.  Students completed a chart with a partner and shared their findings with the class.

We will wrap up the discussion tomorrow.  No assignment

Wednesday, September 23

Once again we “messed up” the SSR schedule.  And once again, it was for a good reason.  Today we presented our Thoreau/Emerson transcendental journals to the class.

Assignment:  Read the Into the Wild excerpt for Thursday. There will be a quiz.

Tuesday, September 22

As promised to the class, students received an extended SSR period to make up for previous missed reading times.

The students also received their assignment for Thursday:  read the excerpt from Into the Wild.

Reminder:  Journals are due tomorrow!

Monday, September 21

Students went to the Little Theatre for a presentation about the PSAT test and job shadowing.  The form for completing a job shadow is due Sept. 24 in the guidance office.

Friday, September 18

Today was a Friday, which means there was a good chance that we had a vocabulary quiz…which we did. 🙂

After the quiz, students went to the courtyard to begin brainstorming for their Thoreau/Emerson journal assignment.  This assignment selecting a favorite Thoreau/Emerson aphorism, summarizing it, and connecting it to the student personally.

The journal is due on Wednesday, September 23.

Thursday, September 17

We’re done with the New England Renaissance…almost!  Students took a 60-point exam in class today.

Friendly reminder: Tomorrow is the vocabulary quiz for List Two.  Words from List One will also be on the quiz.
