Monday, November 22 and Tuesday, November 23

On Monday, students got into three groups to discuss the first 16 pages of The Old Man and the Sea.  Each group will share their discussion with the class.  Although we started the presentations today, we will continue to share them on Monday, November 29.

On Tuesday, students will have a substitute.  During that time, they will work on their reading assignment (up to page 35), completing the study guide for “The Voyage” section, and practicing vocabulary for lessons 1-4.  They will have a reading quiz on Monday, Nov. 29.

 

Wednesday, November 17

Students received copies of The Old Man and the Sea.  They also received a calendar with the due dates for the unit’s assignment.

Next, we began watching a biography of the life of Ernest Hemingway.

Reminder:  Vocabulary lessons due tomorrow.  Vocabulary quiz on Friday.  Reading assignment due on Friday.

Tuesday, November 16

Students spent most of the period listening to guest speakers discuss the project opportunities as IDT.

We also reviewed the vocabulary words for lessons 1-4.  Assignment:  3 vocabulary activities for Thursday.  Vocabulary quiz on Friday.

Monday, November 15

We began _The Old Man and the Sea_ by completing a small group discussion activity.  We also discussed the new vocabulary words for lesson 4.

Friday, Oct. 29

This is the last posting for October…and almost the last posting for our Great Gatsby unit.  The test is on Monday.  In addition to a 60-point test, students need to be asking themselves:  Does Gatsby deserve the title “great”?  They need to be able to support their answer with three examples from the novel…including from the beginning, middle, and end of the text.

Study guides are due on Tuesday, Nov. 2.

Monday, Oct. 25-Tuesday, Oct. 26

Students will be discussing Chapters 6-8 using a visual and textual poster presentation.  The presentations will help them understand key elements, symbols, character and events from these sections.

Test:  November 11

Study guide due:  November 12

Monday, Oct. 18-Wednesday, Oct. 20

After a short reading check quiz, we discussed chapters 4 and 5.  With the help of Michael Jackson, we also discussed the importance of ITEDs.

Class schedule for Tuesday OR Wednesday, depending on ITED schedule:  Discuss chapter 6.  Chapter 7 is due Friday.

Thursday, Oct. 14-Friday, Oct. 15

We are continuing our discussion of The Great Gatsby.  Students took a quiz over chapters 3 and 4 on Thursday and Friday, respectively.  The quiz mania also affected Friday’s activity: Students took a vocabulary quiz over Lesson 2.

Due Monday:  Chapter 5.

Wednesday, Oct. 13

Students took a quiz (or completed a journal summary/reaction) over chapter 3.  We then discussed the significance of colors and symbols in the chapter.

Reminder:  Vocabulary for lesson 2 is due tomorrow.  The quiz is on Friday.  Chapter 4 is due on Friday.

Monday, Oct. 11

Students’ Gothic literature assignments were collected at the beginning of the period.  Also, students reviewed Lesson 1 and 2 vocabulary words for the quiz on Friday.  We also discussed Chapter 2 of The Great Gatsby.

Assignments for the Week:

Tuesday:  Students should be working on all reading and vocabulary assignments AND literary journals.

Wednesday:  Chapter 3 due

Thursday:  Vocabulary Lesson 2 practice due

Friday:  Chapter 4 due; Vocabulary quiz
