Tuesday-Friday, October 27-30

Although students will be given time for SSR, the focus of each day will be completing the persuasive analysis over Makes Me Wanna Holler.

A final rough copy is due Monday, Nov. 2.

Monday, October 26

After SSR, students got back their tests from The Old Man and the Sea.  Next, we discussed the requirements for their papers over the novel and the excerpt from Makes Me Wanna Holler

Assignment:  Prewriting for the paper assignment:  A written thesis statement and four heroic code elements for Nathan McCall.

Friday, October 23

It’s ba-ack!  That’s right…after taking a few days off because of ITED’s and test preparation for the Old Man and the Sea, we resumed SSR today.  We also took a quiz over the chapter “Cycles” from Makes Me Wanna Holler. In small groups and in a large group discussion, we began to discuss McCall’s adherence to the Hemingway heroic code.

Assignment:  Complete the McCall chart using examples from the chapter. Due Monday.

Thursday, October 22

We took the Old Man and the Sea test today.  Books and study guides are due Monday.

Monday, October 19

We began discussing the end of The Old Man and the Sea by focusing on the events of days four and five of Santiago’s voyage.  Since ITED’s begin tomorrow, we also discussed effective ways to prepare for the test.  Students also received the handout from Makes Me Wanna Holler for their writing assignment over the novel.

Assignment:  The test over TOMATS is on Thursday.  The handout/essay must be read by Friday.

Friday, October 16

At the beginning of class, students received a practice quiz to prepare for their Old Man and the Sea test next Thursday.  The class then traveled to the library to prepare for the tests by reviewing sources of information.

Assignment:  Be sure to complete the novel.  Complete the study guide.  Test date: Oct. 22.  Study guide due:  Oct. 23.

Thursday, October 15

After taking the vocabulary quiz for Lesson Four, students were given time to read the rest of the novel The Old Man and the Sea.  The book must be completed for Friday.

Assignment:  Finish the novel.  Due to ITED’s, the test for the book will be Thursday, Oct. 22.

Wednesday, October 14

Although there was no SSR today, students did have a few minutes at the end of the period to complete their last reading assignment for The Old Man and the Sea:  the book must be finished by Friday.

We also reviewed the vocabulary words for Lesson Four for the quiz tomorrow.

Assignment:  Study vocabulary words for Lesson Four quiz on Thursday.  Complete the book for Friday.

Tuesday, October 13

Class began with a review of the vocabulary words from Lesson 4.  Next, we reviewed the key events from Days 1, 2 and 3 from The Old Man and the Sea.  Finally, we answered “challenging” study guide questions from the novel.

Assignment:  Read up to page 82 in the book for class tomorrow.  Vocabulary quiz on Thursday.

Monday, October 12

Although it was a bit shortened, we began class with SSR.  Next, we practiced vocabulary by reviewing the words from Lists 1 and 3 and introducing those from List 4.  We also continued our discussion of The Old Man and the Sea.

Assignment:  Vocabulary flashcards for List 4 are due tomorrow.  Read up to page 82 for Wednesday.  Vocabulary quiz is on Thursday.  The unit test over The Old Man and the Sea will next Monday.
