About U.S. Literature

Course description: This required year-long course is a thematic survey of American literature. Students will reinforce skills and strategies in reading speeches, poems, plays, novels, short stories, and essays from a variety of literary movements. Students will explore career and education options through a career research project and presentation. Speaking and writing assignments will be primarily analytical, persuasive, and expository. Texts will include a variety of canonical and contemporary selections. Credits: 5 credits per trimester will be earned upon successful completion of this course.

Units include The New England Renaissance, The Old Man and the Sea, The Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye, The Things They Carried , The Harlem Renaissance, and a career research project.

Please have the following materials for class:

–Notecards for vocabulary practice

–A highlighter

–A three-ringer binder

–Notebook/paper

–Recommended:  A flashdrive (or some means for storing essays/assignments)
