Monday, November 30

After discussing important information about the setting for Chapter 2 and introducing the vocabulary words from Lesson 6, students had much of the class period to work on their assignment for tomorrow:  Read Chapter 2 of The Great Gatsby and to work on their 10 flashcards for Lesson 6.

Looking ahead:

Tuesday:  Chapter 2 and vocabulary lesson 6 due

Wednesday:  Reading day

Thursday:  Chapters 3 and 4 due

Friday:  Vocabulary quiz over Lesson 6; chapter 5 due

Tuesday, November 24

Students visited the library today to select books for SSR.  We will resume SSR on Monday.  Bring your book!

Monday, November 23

We began class with a 10-point reading check over chapter 1 of The Great Gatsby.  Next, we discussed chapter 1 by focusing on the characters of Tom, Daisy, Jordan, Gatsby and Nick.

Reminder:  Tomorrow we will be in the library for book talks for the second trimester.  Bring your library cards!

Friday, November 20

After discussing the setting and narration of The Great Gatsby, we began reading chapter 1 as a class.

Chapter 1 is due Monday.  There will be a reading check quiz.

Thursday, November 19

After turning in their frames over  F. Scott Fitzgerald, students finished watching the biographical video about his life.  Students also received The Great Gatsby novels and their study guides for the unit.

Wednesday, November 18

After debriefing the video “Berniece Bobs Her Hair,” we watched the A and E video on the life of F. Scott Fitzgerald.  Students are completing a graphic organizer over the personal and professional aspects of Fitgerald’s life.

Assignment for Thursday:  Complete the frame over F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Tuesday, November 17

In order to understand the social climate of the setting of The Great Gatsby, we watched a video of another F. Scott Fitzgerald story, “Berniece Bobs Her Hair.”  Students also completed a worksheet over the viewing of the video.

Assignment:  Complete the worksheet for “Berniece Bobs Her Hair.”  Due Wednesday.

Monday, November 16

We began the first day of the second trimester by beginning a new unit:  The Great Gatsby.  We completed an activity in which students studied five covers of the novel and made inferences about the conflict, characters, and themes of the book. 

Assignment:  Complete the pre-reading questions for the novel.  The assignment is due tomorrow.

Monday and Tuesday, November 9/10

We having been wrapping up the first trimester by finishing our discussion of the Harlem Renaissance and by working on vocabulary for lesson 5.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  There will be a unit and vocabulary quiz on Thursday, Nov. 12.

Friday, November 6

We continued our discussion of the Harlem Renaissance.  Students read the essays “Returning Soldiers” and “The Renaissance.”  After completing a paired activity, we discussed the tone, purpose, and rhetorical strategies of each essay.

Flashcards for vocabulary lesson 5 were checked.

Assignment:  Read and complete the worksheet over Zora Neale Hurston’s “How it Feels to be Colored Me” for Tuesday.
