Monday, Oct.4-Wednesday, Oct. 6

After finishing our discussion of Edgar Allan Poe, we began _The Great Gatsby_.  Tuesday and Wednesday were spent watching an A and E video on the life of author F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Chapter 1 is due on Thursday, Oct. 7.  There will be a quiz.

Monday, Sept. 27-Friday, Oct. 1

In addition to SSR, students have been studying the Gothic elements present in Edgar Allan Poe’s “Hop-Frog,” “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Raven.”  The students have also spent extensive time working on vocabulary.

Three vocabulary exercises were due on Thursday, Sept. 30.  The quiz over lesson one is Friday, Oct. 1.

Monday, September 27

After SSR, we introduced the vocabulary words for lesson one.  Next, we discussed the Poe/Gothic unit assignment, which is due Friday, Oct. 8.   We continued reading “Hop-Frog,” but students are to finish reading it for tomorrow.  There will be a reading check.

Thursday:  VOCABULARY “TIC TAC TOE” DUE

Friday:  Vocabulary quiz Lesson 1

Wednesday, Sept. 22

Students began presenting their transcendental journals in an informal speech setting.  We will complete the presentation of the journals tomorrow.

Tuesday, Sept. 21

Students reaped the reward of passing the New England Renaissance test with at least a B average:  they had SSR for the period.

Tomorrow transcendental journals and speeches are due.

Monday, Sept. 20

Students got their New England Renaissance tests back.  Next, students received a transcendental journal writing/speaking assignment.  It is due on Wednesday.

Reminder:  Students should bring their SSR books tomorrow.

Friday, Sept. 17

Today was the New England Renaissance test.

No homework.

Thursday, Sept. 16

Students reviewed for the New England Renaissance test, which is tomorrow.

Wednesday, Sept. 15

Although would not appreciate the use of technology, we used the Web to read excerpts from _Walden._ The Web quest is due tomorrow.

Reminder:  The “quest” over the New England Renaissance and Thoreau and Emerson is Friday!

Tuesday, Sept. 14

After discussing Ralph Waldo Emerson, students completed a pair activity in which they “translated” several aphorisms of Emerson’s.

Assignment:  Complete the “marathon and sprint” version of Walden.  Reminder:  Report to the computer lab on Wednesday.
